Effect of Perceived COVID-19 Stress on Discriminatory Behavior Toward a Member of Hate Group
요약:
Purpose Since the outbreak of COVID-19, there have been reports of increasing discrimination against hate groups. However, there is a lack of research on why this phenomenon occurs. This study, which started with this awareness of the problem, conducted two experiments to test the hypothesis that the more strongly perceived the stress caused by COVID-19, the more discriminatory behavior toward the hate group would increase.
Methods Experiment 1 distinguished a group with strong and weak COVID-19 stress, and then asked a member of the hate group (religion, foreigner, political orientation) to decide whether to give them a chance to become an employee of the company they run. In Experiment 2, after classifying a group with strong and weak COVID-19 stress, it was rated on a 7-point scale how much they wanted to give interview and employment opportunities to a member of the hate group.
Result As a result, it was confirmed that the group with strong COVID-19 stress made discriminatory decisions that limit the opportunity to become a company employee for the hate group compared to the group with low COVID-19 stress (Expt. 1). In addition, it was confirmed that the group with strong COVID-19 stress had lower intentions to give interview opportunities to members of the hate group and lower intention to give employment opportunities to members of the hate group compared to the weak group (Expt. 2).
Conclusion This study is important in that it empirically verified that stress caused by COVID-19 is a cognitive mechanism of discriminatory behavior that has increased since COVID-19.
